Ill-concealed campaign carnage

on December 10th, 2012 at 6:00 am

By Rich Miller

One of the most fascinating things about the media frenzy surrounding state Sen. Donne Trotter’s arrest last week was that not one of his Democratic 2nd Congressional District opponents immediately jumped in front of the cameras to comment publicly about the matter.

They stayed silent even when Trotter (D-Chicago) announced after he was bonded out of jail the next day that he wouldn’t drop out of the race to replace disgraced former Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

Movie review: Red Dawn

on December 9th, 2012 at 9:00 am

By Jon Gallagher

I’ve done some columns on reboots. I thought I was going to do a review of a reboot. But I’m not. They’re calling Red Dawn a remake. So I’m reviewing a remake. I’m confused.

Back in 1984, the United States was in a staring contest with the Soviet Union. We’d been at odds with them since the end of World War II, and tensions had run high since the Missile Crisis in 1962. Red Dawn came out just before the USSR fell apart, so the concept of the movie was very topical. It featured Russia invading the USA and a ragtag group of high schoolers fleeing to higher ground and conducting guerrilla raids that drove the invading Ruskies nuts. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

White Evangelicals and support for Romney

on December 9th, 2012 at 8:00 am

Presented by the Pew Research Center

Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life

post-rp12-300x200

There was considerable speculation during the 2012 primaries about the strength of support for Mitt Romney among white evangelical Protestants. A Pew Research Center analysis of exit poll data finds that white evangelical Protestants voted for Romney with as much enthusiasm as his other supporters did. In addition, white evangelical Protestants voted as heavily for Romney as they did for the GOP candidates in 2008 and 2004, and they made up about the same share of the electorate as they did in the two previous elections. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
